Learning Zones in the LRC

The Learning Resources Centre has been divided into different study zones to accommodate different ways of studying. Please choose your study area carefully so you don’t disturb others. Staff are regularly patrolling the LRC and they may ask you to move to a more appropriate area.

Silent areas - Red Zones

Silent areas are indicated by a red sign. These areas should be kept completely silent. Texting is permitted but mobiles should be switched to silent.
Location of Silent Areas

  • the silent study room and the study area at the back on ground floor
  • the lower ground floor
  • the middle room in IT1 (IT1B)
  • the computer room next to Education library in IT2 (IT2B)

Quiet areas - Orange Zones

Quiet areas are indicated by an orange sign. In these areas, quiet study and group study work is permitted. Texting is allowed but mobiles should be switched to silent.
Location of Quiet Areas

  • group study rooms on ground floor
  • the student presentation room on lower ground floorthe education library on first floor
  • all parts of IT1 except for the middle room
  • the longer room with plasma screen in IT2 (IT2A)

Phone areas - Green Zones

Phone areas are indicated by a green sign. Mobile phone calls may ONLY be made or received in the phone zones.
Location of Phone Areas

  • the ‘out of hour’ stairs leading up to the IT rooms
  • the stairs leading up to IT1 at the back of silent study space on ground floor
  • the corridor in IT1 (but please note that the area around the IT Helpdesk is not a phone area).

i-learn café

This is a relaxed social learning environment where students can use PCs, chat, or work in groups. Students are welcome to bring in food and drink to consume in the i-learn café or to purchase coffee from the coffee machine.

Group Study Rooms

There are two groups study rooms at the back of the LRC and a student presentation room on the lower ground floor(groups of four or more can book the student presentation room). These rooms can be booked in advance for up to 2 hours per day at the Information desk. There is a plasma screen in each of these rooms that can be used for presentations.
